Despite the foreboding weather forecast there was a great turn out at the Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony at Milton Keynes (Bletchley) Storage King on Friday 22nd August.
Special Guest and former Formula 1 Racing Driver Jackie Oliver was on hand to cut the ribbon of the 'Wind Tunnel' building which boasts a rich and historical past closely linked to the development of Milton Keynes.
The building was initially used as a storage site to store roofing materials for the construction of new homes in the Milton Keynes area. After which it was owned by Jackie Oliver and used as a wind tunnel to aerodynamically test new designs of formula 1 cars when Arrows Racing were based on the site. Jackie then turned the building into a bulk Storage facility which was then purchased by Storage King who redeveloped it into individual Self Storage units.
This building now offers storage for local people in Milton Keynes to store the contents of their homes completing the circle of the buildings history.
This is a fitting final chapter in Jackie's link with the site, in 1977 Jackie was part of a management group who formed the Arrows F1 Racing Team who were based at the Bletchley site.
After the sale of Arrows F1 Arrows Self Storage began trading in 1998 out of the existing Wind Tunnel building, The store traded successfully as an independent self storage operator for 14 years when it was purchased by Storage King in October 2012.
The opening event marks the completed fit out of the building to Self Storage, the site now boasts 511 storage rooms, ranging from 10 sq ft up to 500 sq ft with a total rentable storage area of 34,477 sq ft, you could park 82 Double Decker buses in the footprint of the buildings at Storage King Milton Keynes. The site also has offices to rent, a great solution for local businesses, with the added benefit of storage on site
Jackie provided the attendees with a great speech explaining the history of this unassuming building, before cutting the ribbon.
All attendees who were present on the day were given a special number equating to a room number in the new building and were invited to find a member of the Storage King staff to open their unit to see what prize was inside. The prizes ranged from vintage sweets, toy racing cars and a top prize of a £100 John Lewis voucher.
The winner of the £100 voucher was Dawn from the Henry Allen Trust, the Trust currently stores with Storage King and Dawn was delighted to have picked the lucky number. The voucher is being put towards a purchase for the children's ward at Milton Keynes Hospital. The charity also connected with a number of Storage Kings other clients and suppliers who have pledged items to the Trust.
Hartdean who supply linens to the Hotel and Leisure Industry donated towels and Allfix pledged to donate signage and branded clothing.
The Henry Allen Trust was set up in memory of Henry Allen to bring 'happiness' to children and families battling childhood cancer. The registered charity run by Dawn and Mark, Henry's parents aim is to 'create smiles and memories' for local children aged 0-18 and their families.
